The Last Person On Earth

The last person on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock at the door. She shivered at the sound of the knock; goosebumps ran up and down her arms. The sound of her heart was beating loudly in her ears. Lana moved slowly up the wall, being sure to keep her eyes on the door. She took slow, deep breaths to try and control the panic that threatened to overtake her. She had been alone for months inside the tiny cabin in the mountains. She left the city as soon as the war had broken out. She was sure that everyone was dead. All forms of communication were out. She couldn’t even make a phone call. So, who could this be knocking at the door? Or was she going crazy, Lana thought to herself. Now, her heartbeat pulsed even louder in her ears. She slowly exhaled after realizing she was holding her breath, waiting for them to knock again. The door rattled loudly, startling her again as whoever was on the other side tried to turn the locked door.

“Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff comfort me,” Lana quietly said to herself as she grabbed her father's hunting knife.

The knocking was replaced by the brutal sounds of someone trying to forcefully kick in the door. Lana was frozen with fear and the knowledge that this might be it. This is how her life ends, alone dirty and scared in her family cabin killed by some unknown thing.

“Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff comfort me,” Lana repeats again

The door frame splinters with the last kick and as the door fly’s open Lana’s body falls to the floor with a loud thud.
